The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) enters phase 4 with a very different look. Not only relying on fictional cosmic technologies with terrible power, Marvel Studios has now included many different types of magic and magic to diversify its works.
On the occasion of the upcoming blockbuster Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, let’s review the types of magic that have appeared in the MCU so far. And let’s wait and see in the upcoming multiverse adventure, Stephen Strange and Wanda Maximoff will use or discover other types of mystical powers.
Celestial’s Magic
Although there is no official name, but what the Eternals can do in their solo movie shows that they can also use a special type of magic compared to humanity, possibly originating from the entities that created them. With its distinctive yellow color, this type of magic is described as a form of cosmic energy that the Eternals can harness, control, and deploy whenever they want.
For example, Thena can mold that energy into unique weapons; or Sprite can easily create illusions to deceive enemies. Each member of the Eternals has their own mindset and uses for the cosmic power the Celestials provide them.
Eldritch magic
First appearing in Doctor Strange, Eldritch magic is the name given to the source of energy used by the Masters of the Mystic Art. This type of magic can be controlled by disciplined and focused people who have diligently practiced magic for many years in a methodical manner.
An expert on Eldritch magic, Strange is currently one of the most powerful mages in the MCU. He can create various magical weapons to attack, create shields for defense, use illusions to deceive opponents, move between dimensions,… Sometimes, a Some people can use Eldritch between the aid of a series of items imbued with this wonderful magic, like when Ned opened the portal in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Magic Asgard
The first type of magic to appear in the MCU belongs to the Asgardians, the homeland of the thunder god Thor. A number of gods live in Odin’s kingdom who have the ability to manipulate powerful magical energies and use them to serve a variety of purposes. Thor himself also believes that magic is an advanced form of science that has been developed over the centuries.
One of Asgard’s most successful witches is Frigga, Thor’s mother, and the one who passed on her skills to Loki. Characteristic green and somewhat dark, this type of magic was once used by Loki to create illusions, disguising himself as anyone else, projecting energy to attack opponents, transforming objects from the air, or create shields to protect themselves.
Jotun Magic
Even without Frigga’s guidance, Loki himself already has a strong connection to magic thanks to his Frost Giants origin. Members of this race can use ice magic, allowing them to manipulate, control, and to some extent, the country. This is why Laufey and his allies can create weapons, armor, and ice shields with ease. Loki of course possesses this kind of magic as well, but it seems he decided not to use them, remaining faithful to what Frigga taught him.
Dark Dimension Magic
In the MCU, the Masters of Mysticism have always believed that using magic from the Dark Dimension is a forbidden act that can endanger reality. However, after all, it turns out that the Ancient One violated this rule many years ago.
Gathering power from Dormammu’s realm could grant Earth magicians vast, rich sources of magic far beyond Eldritch. However, if they don’t know how to control or abuse it, they can be corrupted and become Dormammu’s subordinates, helping him to conquer other dimensions.
Dark Magic (Dark Magic)
The power of the Dark Dimension isn’t the only type of voodoo that wizards in the MCU can use. The WandaVision series introduced a new type of dark magic with a distinctive purple color, used by Agatha Harkness after researching the Darkhold book.
This type of magic also seems to have returned in episode 2 of Moon Knight, when the villain Arthur Harrow used Ammit’s staff to summon fierce jackals. That suggests that Darkhold or Ammit is probably the source of this mystical power, and it will certainly continue to be exploited in future projects.
Chaos Magic (Chaos Magic)
The WandaVision series has confirmed that Wanda is a born mage, and can use Chaos Magic with its distinctive red color. In the comics, Chaos Magic is derived from an Elder God named Chthon – one of the most powerful beings to ever appear on Earth.
It was Chthon who infused a part of her Chaos Magic into Wanda’s body when she was young, thereby “clearing the way” for her to become the Scarlet Witch in Marvel Comics. With earth-shattering powers, Wanda is able to reshape the very structure of reality itself. That’s how she created Westview and manipulated people’s lives to create her own fantasy world. Based on what happened in WandaVision, it can be seen that this is the most powerful magic in the MCU at the moment.
Dark Magic and Chaos Magic will certainly continue to be deeply explored in future MCU movies, as Scarlet Witch is gradually becoming one of the most important characters of this universe.
