Knowledge of relative clause reduction

* Because the sentence already has a complete subject, the verb to fill in the blank must be a shortened form of the relative clause.

* As a rule, we have three ways to reduce relative clauses:

– Verbs in the active form: remove the relative pronoun and change the verb to the Ving form.

– Verbs in the passive: omit the relative pronoun, the verb “tobe” and leave the participle form Vp2.

– When a relative clause replaces a noun phrase containing ordinal/superlative/the only…. then we will reduce the relative clause by using To V.

* In terms of the meaning of the sentence, the verb “appear” has an active meaning, so according to the first rule, we shorten it to “appearing”. Also, “appear” is an intransitive verb so it can never be in the passive voice.

I am writing on the topic of volunteering opportunities which appeared on November 10th.
