The Five Senses
We live in a world full of colors, sensations, tastes, sounds and smells.
The human body has five senses that make our life a lot more interesting. They are hearing, touch, taste, smell and sight. Our body uses organs to do some of the work. These organs are our ears, skin, tongue, nose and eyes. When we use these organs, they talk to our brain. They may warn us by telling us something is too hot when touched. When we touch things, small hairs and sensors in our skin figure out what we feel. The sense of hearing uses tiny little hairs and bones in our ears to figure out sounds. We have around 10,000 taste buds on our tongue to help us taste food. The sense of smell uses hundreds of sensory cells in our nose. Our sense of sight uses over two million different tiny parts in our eyes to see! Most people use more than one sense to figure things out.

It is not easy to work in the fragrance industry. Perfumers need an extraordinary sense of smell and a solid knowledge of chemistry, in addition to completing specialist studies in perfumery. Normally, it takes ten years of studies and training to be recruited a professional perfumer.
Some consider perfumers as experts in chemistry and gas chromatography. In fact, they must be able to analyze chemical substances that form the additives in the fragrance and make detailed analysis of aromatic chemicals, as well as perform physical tests. At higher levels, they also take quality control measures and get involved in the preparation of a fragrance to make sure that the manufacturing process conforms to safety standards.
As any other jobs, a perfumer may encounter challenges at work. It may be the problem of low engagement. Consumers do not engage in the perfume industry as much as they used to, because many brands focus on producing commonplace fragrances in large quantities. This results in the same products from different brands, or market saturation. As a result, perfumers are required to work harder to create their brands’ signature fragrances.
Becoming a perfumer is a career choice. It thrusts you into an incredible world of unexpected, original and timeless scents. It also gives you a chance to let your creativity and imagination run wild as you develop fragrances that may become global success.

Taste or gustation is one of the five traditional senses including hearing, sight, touch and smell. Humans can distinguish five basic tastes. Each and every one of them is a message that tells us something about what we put into our mouth, so we can decide whether it should be eaten. A sweet taste can signal the presence of natural sugars and other carbohydrates found in many fruits and honey. They play an important role in giving and storing energy. Salty foods usually signal the presence of sodium. This element is necessary for maintaining our bodies’ water balance and circulating the flow of blood and nutrients. Bitter tastes can signal the presence of 35 different proteins found in plants. However, some of them are unpleasant to taste and can be toxic. A sour taste can signal the presence of acidic solutions like lemon juice and organic acids. Acids may indicate that food is no longer healthy and suitable to eat. Umami or savoury comes from protein building blocks (amino acids) found naturally in protein-rich foods like meats and cheese.
