Staff at a game studio in Japan are taking two days off to play one of the most anticipated games of the year.
Pocket Pair, the Tokyo-based studio behind the survival game Craftopia, has told employees that they can take Friday off (February 25) and Monday (February 28) to play Elden. Ring, the new game created by author George RR Martin of the Game of Thrones series.
“All Pocket Pair employees will be taking the ‘Elden’ holiday,” the company wrote on Twitter.
Pocket Pair also posted a photo of the company’s president and wrote that he “can’t wait for the Elden holiday”, by translation from Japanese.
Elden Ring, announced in 2019, is an open-world role-playing game created by George RR Martin and legendary game designer Hidetaka Miyazaki. The studio that developed this game, FromSoftware, has also created popular titles like Dark Souls and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. All have turned this latest title into one of the most anticipated games of 2022.
The game was available yesterday morning on Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 5, and PC platforms, but it appears a few players have experienced performance issues. Game publisher Bandai Namco has apologized to the community and said it will work to improve some of the frame rate issues PC users are experiencing.
However, game reviewers still called Elden Ring a masterpiece, and before the game’s release, it had more than 700,000 concurrent viewers on Twitch, breaking the previous record.
Now that Pocket Pair employees enjoy a four-day weekend playing Elden Ring, they’re officially part of an emerging trend in the gaming industry. It’s about giving employees a break before a big game release. Last March, VR studio Mark-On asked its employees to spend three weekends playing Monster Hunter Rise, although this break does not apply to executives, according to Kotaku.
