Researchers at the University of Nottingham have made a hopeful discovery: a plant-based pharmaceutical cure for COVID-19 is effective against variants of SARS-CoV-2, even Delta mutation is spreading in many places.
Efforts to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic are increasingly difficult, as the SARS-CoV-2 virus continuously mutates into unpredictable variants that both spread easily and cause more severe symptoms than before.
In a new study published in Virulence, a team of scientists led by Professor Kin-Chow Chang discovered remarkable characteristics of Delta variants: they are capable of replicating fastest, and can infect neighboring cells almost directly.
But at the same time, research also shows that thapsigargin (abbreviated: TG), a natural antiviral drug, is effective in treating new variants of SARS-CoV-2, including evil Delta body. In previous studies with some respiratory viruses, TG also showed amazing efficacy.
“Our new research provides further insights into the superior capabilities of the Delta variant. Given that this variant is clearly the most contagious and enhances the reproduction of other variants when co-infected with the same individual, we are also pleased to report that TG is effective in treating all of the above variants. Taken together, these results suggest the antiviral potential of TG .“, said Professor Kin-Chow Chang, editor of the scientific report.
