Ken Pillonel was once famous as the creator of the first iPhone with a USB-C port, this time he is back with another product, also in the Apple ecosystem, which is AirPods. Like the iPhone, this popular true-wireless headset is equipped with Lightning and Pillonel ports, once again making people admire when bringing USB-C to Apple’s wireless headphones.
This project was not easy, especially since Pillonel wanted to make sure that the final product looked the best it could. Essentially, he wants the AirPods case with USB-C charging to have the same quality as something Apple designed itself. “I set high standards for the appearance of the finished product.” Pillonel said.
He also wants to make it easier for other AirPods owners to follow the project. As a result, Pillonel makes the USB-C port a “completely new replacement” for AirPods, allowing people to simply “unplug the old Lightning connector” and “put the new USB-C circuit in”.
Despite facing some difficulties, Pillonel says the results were worth it: “It’s gratifying that I can use one cable and charger for all my Apple devices.”
Pillonel has uploaded a short video of the project’s progress to YouTube, a more detailed video that will be uploaded in the future.
The world’s first AirPods with a USB-C . port
Apple’s insistence on using the Lightning port to charge AirPods and iPhones makes many users uncomfortable. In a world where MacBooks and iPads can charge with USB-C, it’s inconvenient to carry around Lightning cables for other products in the same ecosystem.
