Austin ISD’s deficit budget raises pay, funds special education

The Austin school board has approved a $2.1 billion budget for its upcoming fiscal year amid complaints that the Legislature has failed to increase per pupil funding for Texas public schools.

The Austin school board on Thursday approved a $2.1 billion budget for its upcoming fiscal year that spends almost $64 million for employee raises, $6.2 million to hire staff to evaluate special education students and $1.3 million to expand literacy programs.

The hefty budget comes with a $52 million deficit, a number that school board members said could have been reduced with additional investment from the Legislature.

The bulk of the district’s deficit is due to significant staff pay increases, which the board agreed to fund last month. Teachers, counselors, librarians and instructional coaches will get a 7% raise, and hourly workers will see a $4 per hour increase, as per the approved budget. The board also set a $20 per hour minimum pay rate.
