If you ask 7 people around you:Did you ever have a headache today?”you will surely find an answer”Have“. And if you change”today” Fort “in the past year”then 1 out of every 2 respondents will nod.
These are statistics drawn by scientists from a new study published in the Journal of Headache and Pain. Accordingly, up to 15% of the population, or 1.1 billion people, suffers from headaches every day. And 52% of the population, or 4.1 billion people, suffer from headaches every year.
Headache seems to be becoming a chronic disease that haunts mankind.
In case you didn’t know, headaches are the result of signals interacting between the brain, blood vessels, and nerves around the head. Headaches that occur after something activates specific nerves that affect muscles and blood vessels. These nerves send pain signals to the brain and make you feel discomfort in different ways.
There are mild but dull headaches, but there are also paroxysmal and severe headaches. You may also have pain on one side of your head or in clusters.
If divided by cause, there are primary headaches caused by tension, genetics… and secondary headaches, caused by vascular diseases, trauma, sinus congestion or tumors… caused.
Scientists have estimated that there are over 150 causes and types of headaches in all. This explains why it has become the symptom that bothers humanity the most right now.
And if you remember, COVID-19 can also cause headaches.
In an updated review of the Global Burden of Disease project, a team of brain researchers in Norway and the United Kingdom re-evaluated 350 major statistical studies around the world on headache up to 2015. 2020.
In addition to the numbers found above, which say more than half of the world’s population suffers from headaches every year, the study also found that 26% of people have tension-type headaches and 14% have migraines.
About 5% of the population deal with headaches that last more than 15 days per month. And with that said, about one in seven of the respondents said they had headaches every day.
These results are in line with previous estimates and again show that headaches are still an increasingly common problem worldwide.
The cause could be from the fact that our world is becoming more and more stressful. Exposure to polluted environments as well as genetic factors also contribute to increased headaches, the new study authors said.
Doctors say most headaches cause discomfort and decrease productivity, but they are only fleeting and you can simply wait for them to go away.
But about 10% of headaches are considered severe and require medical treatment. You should seek medical attention if headaches persist for more than 72 hours. In addition, a headache accompanied by some of the following symptoms is also dangerous:
– Headache with nausea
– Double look
– Dizziness, fall
– Stutter
– Fever
– Lost weight
– Constant insomnia
– Swollen or sluggish limbs
These are most likely additional symptoms from a secondary headache, and you should see your doctor to find out what is really causing them so that they can be treated promptly.
