The series Moon Knight is constantly taking the audience from surprise to surprise through each broadcast episode, culminating in a “strangled twist” in the last 10 minutes of episode 4, released on 20/02. 4. After WandaVision and Loki, fans continued to have their brains hacked and were stuck in a state of chaos, confused because they didn’t understand what was going on.
Similar to the main character Marc Spector, no one can distinguish what is real and what is an illusion, at least for now. And depending on how the drama is handled, what happened in the previous 3 episodes, or maybe it’s just a fictional scenario Marc drew up in his mind; or Marvel is clearing the way for even more awesome twists in the final two episodes.
What happened at the end of episode 4 Moon Knight?
The latest episode of Moon Knight follows Steven Grant and Layla in search of Ammit’s secret tomb. However, at the moment when it seemed to have succeeded, Steven/Marc Spector was suddenly killed by the villain Arthur Harrow with 2 bullets straight into the chest, representing 2 personalities existing in the same body.
However, that is not the end for Marc. Because in the next scene, he suddenly woke up in a mysterious and a bit strange mental hospital. All the characters that have appeared in the Moon Knight series are present here, with other roles such as patients, doctors, and nurses. Marc himself is also a patient with serious psychological problems, to the point that his legs are tied to a wheelchair and has a lot of difficulty in moving under the effect of sedatives.
Like Marc, this whole development leaves the audience bewildered as to what happened, and where is reality. Even more surprising, at this hospital, Marc and Steven are two separate individuals and can physically interact with each other, instead of having to talk through mirror images like the previous 3 episodes. Episode 4 ends with the two people trying to escape together, before encountering a hippo that can talk and walk on two hind legs – the god Taweret in Egyptian mythology.
The brain-damaging ending was inspired by a Moon Knight series
To explain the ending of episode 4, or any other work of the MCU, contrasting with the original is always the most effective method. This ending is inspired by Jeff Lemire’s Moon Knight (2016) series, when Ammit uses magic to force Marc Spector to believe he is a mental patient, and the whole superhero journey. Before that it was just a product of his own imagination.
In the comics, Marc is also locked in a mental hospital directly managed by a doctor named Emmett (actually Ammit). The two nurses supporting Emmet are Billy and Bobby – these are the names of the two policemen who escorted Steven to Arthur Harrow’s lair in episode 2. The two of them are actually 2 jackals, and Incidentally, in the TV version, Moon Knight confronted both of these beasts.
Emmett always tries to convince Marc that Moon Knight is just an illusion created by him since he was 12 years old. However, Khonshu suddenly appeared in Marc’s mind and reminded him of his true identity, thereby motivating him to free himself. As it turns out, the real “hallucination” is the hospital itself – actually a place beyond space and time, called Othervoid.
The next segment is the multiverse journey of the personalities in Marc, as they come across many realities that confuse the audience. For example, in 1 universe, Steven Grant is a TV director and is working on a movie called Moon Knight; Jake Lockley, a taxi driver suspected of being the culprit in a murder; and Moon Knight became a talented astronaut.
After all, Marc discovers that Khonshu is the one who manipulated everything to destroy his mind and take over his body. The moon god even watched Marc since he was a boy to prepare for his plot. The Moon Knight personalities then banded together to smash Khonshu’s bird skull, destroying him once and for all.
Explaining the ending of episode 4 Moon Knight
With the above information, perhaps the latest episode of Moon Knight is also somewhat easier to understand: Marc Spector failed to stop Arthur Harrow, Ammit god was freed and used magic to trap Marc. into a fictional mental hospital. She wanted him to forget about the existence of the Moon Knight and Khonshu, but Marc’s mind wouldn’t allow that.
There are quite a few details that show that this mental hospital is not real. The most prominent of them is the fact that Marc and Steven are two independent individuals who can talk directly, even hug each other. They all remember what happened before, remember the event that they were shot down by Arthur Harrow, before waking up here. Also, it makes no sense to place coffins with ancient Egyptian designs in modern hospital rooms – unless it’s a product of the imagination.
Another theory is that the entire ending of episode 4 took place in Moon Knight’s mind, when both Marc and Steven were locked by another personality, not allowing control of their bodies. Marvel Comics has also exploited the same idea to portray “Marc Spector’s catacombs”, forcing him to fight and find his way back to Khonshu. Therefore, it is possible that if they find a way out of this mental hospital, Marc and Steven will be able to revive and “flip” Arthur Harrow.
Besides, the ending of episode 4 also indirectly confirms that there is still another personality in Marc’s body – a detail that has been teased many times in the previous 3 episodes. However, when going through this coffin, both Steven and Marc actively ignored it and just focused on finding a way to escape. That shows that the 2 people seem to be unaware of the existence of this personality.
